Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, is used to treat several mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar and personality disorders, mild cognitive impairments, and ADHD.
TMS has been shown and proven to be effective, while being safe, due to the non-invasive nature of the treatment.
It is performed by having an electromagnetic coil placed on the scalp, typically near the forehead.
Once in place, it delivers pulses of electromagnetic energy into the brain, specifically to the region that is responsible for depression and mood control.
It is believed that when a patient suffers from depression or other mental health conditions, this region of the brain has decreased activity.
The application of electromagnetic energy pulses seems to reactivate these regions by stimulating the brain’s nerve cells, and in turn, helping to relieve symptoms of mental health conditions and enabling the patient to get back to their normal self.
TMS therapy is used under the care and supervision of a doctor who is trained and experienced in mental health conditions, such as the team at the Brain Health Center.
A TMS therapy machine provides a safe, non-invasive treatment option for patients suffering from depression and other mental and physical health conditions that are not responding to current, standard treatment.
Treatment using a TMS machine involves the transmission of electromagnetic energy pulses into the patient’s brain, targeting the regions of the brain that are responsible for mood control, and are believed to cause depression.
These regions appear to have lower than normal activity in the nerve cells, which is increased in response to electromagnetic energy.
TMS therapy involves the placement of an electromagnet coil on the patient’s scalp, close to the forehead.
As the coil is placed on the skin and doesn’t break the skin or involve any type of injection, it has a lower chance of negative side effects and is less risky than other, more invasive procedures.
The location of the coils and the strength of the magnetic energy can be varied from one patient to the next, with Dr. Jacob Bishop, MD determining the best options for you during your initial treatment.
Everyone who is treated using TMS therapy has their own unique symptoms and response to treatment.
This means that each case will be treated differently, with the treatment plan built according to your individual needs and varied as needed to continue to be effective.
Your initial TMS therapy appointment will be the longest, as Dr. Jacob Bishop, MD will need to determine the best location for the electromagnetic coil to be placed and will need to adjust the electromagnetic energy pulses to be ideal for you.
Typically, you can expect this appointment to last roughly an hour, but Dr. Jacob Bishop, MD should be able to confirm the timing with you before your appointment so you can plan accordingly.
Additional treatments will take about 40 minutes, but again Dr. Jacob Bishop, MD will be able to give your more exact details during your consultation appointment or your initial appointment.
The number of treatments needed will also vary, but most treatment plans require several appointments a week for about four to six weeks.
Some patients may need additional follow-up treatments after the initial treatment series, depending on how they respond to the TMS therapy.
The team at the Brain Health Center can provide you with a detailed treatment plan, including the duration of your sessions and how many sessions you will need.
They can also let you know when and how to determine if you will need additional or ongoing sessions beyond the initial series.
TMS therapy is not an instant fix or remedy for symptoms of depression and other mental health conditions.
It will take time for the electromagnetic energy pulses to revive and stimulate the nerve cells in the brain, which will then need time to get back up to normal activity levels.
Each treatment plan will be unique, as will the patient’s response to the treatment and therefore the length of time needed for the treatment to start working.
Patients will often start to experience an easing of their symptoms within a few weeks of starting treatment.
The team of experts at the Brain Health Center works with each of our patients individually to build a treatment plan as unique as the person being treated. With our extensive knowledge and experience with TMS therapy, we will be able to provide patients with an idea of when they can start to experience relief.
