PTSD also medically known as post traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder which is caused by being involved in or witnessing extremely distressing and frightening events.
Various regions in the brain and their functions are affected when someone suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. TMS therapy helps by stimulating the cells in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex with electromagnetic impulses, which are delivered through an electromagnetic coil. This treatment also helps to regulate cells in other regions of the brain which are associated with PTSD, and can possibly bring back normal levels of activity.
TMS therapy helps to restore the balance and stability in your brain and ease your PTSD symptoms.
Before any of our patients begin a TMS therapy treatment with Brain Health Center, we will have them undergo a physical and psychiatric evaluation to determine if this therapy plan is appropriate for them. Normally, TMS therapy will only be recommended for individuals who suffer from PTSD or major depressive disorders as well as anxiety and other issues.
Before your treatment, make sure to tell our doctor if you:
– Have any medical history or family history of seizures
– Have any implanted devices in you including:
2. Implanted stimulators
3. Electrodes for monitoring brain activity
4. Cochlear implants
– Medications you are taking
– If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
TMS therapy is an FDA approved and safe form of treatment for many individuals that are looking for an alternative to medication treatment or want to experience relief from their symptoms of PTSD.
During your treatment time, your doctor will place an electromagnetic coil against your head, these magnetic fields help to stimulate specific areas of your brain. Every patient is fully awake during their treatment and many have noted to feeling a slight tapping sensation against their forehead and hearing a clicking noise.
Your treatment plan will vary from others, as each individuals treatment plan will be different, you may be recommended to undergo a certain number of treatments and may be recommended to continue with booster treatments once the initial treatment sessions are completed.
TMS therapy appointments can last anywhere from 5 minutes in length, as it depends on each patients case. After your treatment, you should start to notice the symptoms of your PTSD either improving or disappearing. Many do not notice a difference after the first appointment, as it can take several weeks to experience relief.
Each patient we see at our clinic Brain Health Center notice different results, as it all depends on the individual factors such as how severe their PTSD symptoms are and how long they have suffered from PTSD for. Many of our patients experience the beneficial effects TMS therapy offers in just a few short weeks, and others can see the therapy work even sooner than that.
One of the great things about TMS therapy, is our patients arrive at our outpatient clinic, which means they can drive themselves to and from an appointment without having to look for constant help getting to and from appointments. You can continue your daily activities after you have completed your treatment, as there is no sedation or general anesthesia required for our non-invasive drug free therapy.
