What are the benefits of TMS Therapy for Stroke Rehabilitation?

Our stroke rehabilitation therapy uses TMS technology which is better known as transcranial magnetic stimulation and is a type of brain stimulation therapy. TMS Therapy is a drug free and non-invasive treatment that uses electromagnetic pulses to help stimulate the brain’s nerve cells, which improve symptoms of neurological and mental health disorders.

Our TMS Therapy is done by our doctors who specialize in this form of therapy, at our outpatient clinic Brain Health Center.

How can TMS Therapy help with stroke rehabilitation?

Strokes happen when the blood flowing to the brain is blocked or even reduced, which causes the brain cells to begin to die. This can then result in long-term loss of muscle movement.

Our TMS therapy can help with your stroke rehabilitation and can promote motor recovery. The magnetic impulses can alter the activity in the motor cortex, which is the part of the brain that controls your voluntary movement. TMS Therapy has also shown to possibly improve difficulty swallowing, by stimulating the motor cortex, not all patients may experience this, but it is a great possibility for many of our patients who have suffered from a stroke and experience difficulty swallowing after.

What should I expect during the procedure?

During the first treatment with the Brain Health Center, our doctors will offer our patients to wear earplugs, this will help to minimize the clicking sound many may hear due to the magnetic impulses. Our patients will also have a comfortable chair to sit in during your treatment to relax and help you feel more at ease. Due to our therapy being non-invasive and not painful, general anesthesia is not offered, and our patients will remain awake during the entirety of the treatment.

If this is the patients first treatment session, our doctors will begin to measure the patients head to determine where its best to place the magnetic coil as well as take other measurements to personalize the setting on our TMS machine specifically for each individual patient.

Once that is completed, our doctor will place the magnetic coil above the front area of the brain, and the treatment will commence. Many hear a clicking sound, this is the sound of the magnetic impulses being released. Some patients have noted they also feel a tapping or even knocking sensation beneath the magnetic coil. Each patient will experience some of the following a little bit differently from others, or nothing at all.

Our TMS therapy treatment can last around 5 minutes, and once completed, our patients can drive themselves home and continue to resume normal daily activities.

Each patient is different, so the recommended treatment options for stroke rehabilitation may differ.

What are the benefits of TMS Therapy for Stroke Rehabilitation?

TMS therapy helps to treat many secondary symptoms after a patient suffers from a stroke, and it has the most effective results on movement issues. Many of the results we see with our stroke rehabilitation patients offer profound effects especially on those dealing with severe motor impairments. TMS therapy also helps to treat some cognitive effects from a stroke. Most notably; however, is when only ten minutes of TMS therapy is given, it results in significant improvements in naming skills in non-fluent aphasia patients.

TMS Therapy offers multiple benefits to stroke survivors in rehabilitation and the non-invasive properties makes it an ideal solution for stroke rehabilitation therapy. TMS therapy is not a cure for patients who have suffered from a stroke, it does still require work on the patient’s end to produce much of the results.
